Site promotion is important. You want more people to come to your website because the more hits you get the more customers you get. And in order to get more hits, you need to use SEO to promote and get a higher rank in Google. But everybody has the same question when it comes choosing what’s the best way to do it: search engine optimization or pay per click? The truth is that either can be useful, but when it comes to developing a long term plan, I believe that search engine optimization is better. While I wouldn’t discount pay per click completely, I believe that the key to internet marketing is search engine optimization.

In case you were wondering, pay per click is how Google makes its money. For the uninitiated, pay per click refers to the ads you see alongside your search results on Google. It’s called “pay per click” because Google charges a client money every time that anyone clicks on the link that they paid. “Search engine optimization”, or SEO, refers to changing your website so that it ranks higher in the Google results organically.

Now, the reasons that search engine optimization is better than pay per click are numerous. For starters, pay per click naturally charges more based on how any clicks you receive; if your websites get more traffic as a result of ranking higher in Google, you will of course have to pay more. SEO firms will usually charge a flat fee, so no matter how popular your website become, you’re not going to have to spend any more money, which is great.

Secondly, SEO actually is preferred by Google users. There have been numerous studies that have proved that Google users avoid anything that is called an advertisement in their Google search results (and, in case you were wondering: everything that is an ad is called an ad in your Google results). Like it always is in business, it’s best to give your users what they are looking for.

And the coup de grace, search engine optimization edges out pay per click because it has greater staying power. If you ever stop paying for ads, you’re no longer going to be found in Google’s search results at all, which makes sense: why would Google let you stay if you’re not paying them. The work done on search engine optimization does not fade as quickly as pay per click, so you can still have your results in Google for a long time. So, search engine optimization is ultimately a much better investment than pay per click to get that higher ranking in Google.
